Is there a way to tell you apart?
Yes, my face is rounder and my feet are bigger. Also, I now need glasses.
Are you indentical or fraternal?
Identical (I think – born in the ‘70s and never tested)
How far apart are you?
1 minute
Do you share a special connection? Do you have twin telepathy?
Yes. We are very close. I’m not sure about telepathy, but we have had some crazy things like me knowing my sister was in a car accident before being notified and often calling/texting each other at the exact same time.
Do people mistake you for each other, how have you used that to your advantage?
Yes. I’ve gotten hugs from random people thinking I’m her. We switched classes in high school for a few days.
Did you ever dress alike?
Yes, when we were little and didn’t get to choose. Not since then. Though, we have unknowingly bought the same clothes as adults.
Favorite memory together?
No favorite individual memory, but most of my favorite memories are with her.
(For Identical Twins) Do you ever do anything to look less alike?
Yes. When I was in high school I actually got a perm (curly hair) to try to look different from her so people could tell us apart.
Do you have the same personalities and interests?
Many of the same interests and personality traits, but definitely different personalities.
How do you celebrate your birthdays?
As kids, always together, always shared. As adults, we try to see each other on our birthdays – or at the very least sing, “you say it’s your birthday…it’s my birthday too!” LOL
What was the most embarrassing situation you ever found yourself in because you’re a twin?
Her boyfriend (at the time) once grabbed my booty thinking I was her. Awkward!
Have you struggled with your identity?
Yes. I struggled to find my own identity for a long time. I feel very good about it now, and actually have started redefining myself as who I am today AND a twin. I think it makes other relationships more difficult as there’s no one who knows me, supports me, gets me like she does.
Do you sometimes compare yourself to your twin?
Yes. I have struggled with feeling like she’s the smarter, prettier, more successful twin. But I’m getting more secure in the fact that we each have our strengths and struggles.
What effects does being a twin have on your life?
It makes me less comfortable being alone, as I’ve always had her. But I also have the greatest best friend of anyone I know.
What are the most annoying things people have said to you about being a twin?
Do you feel each other’s pain? Can you read each other’s mind? How do you know you’re you and not her? How do you like being a twin?
What’s the biggest fight you’ve ever had with your twin?
I don’t know that we ever had a true knock-down, drag-out fight. We used to argue about stupid stuff as kids, but we’ve always been very close.
Growing up, how was your relationship with your twin?
Very good/close. Some regular sibling rivalry/arguing, but we were always the best of friends.
How is your relationship with your twin now?
Great. She is still my very best friend.
What are the biggest misconceptions about twins?
That we aren’t separate people.
What are disadvantages of being a twin?
It can be hard to form your own identity and become independent.
What are advantages of being a twin?
Having a built-in best friend that truly understands you.
What are things to NOT say to twins?
Telling them which one is the more attractive/skinnier/smarter/better one.
Say something to twins
Being a twin is such a gift that I hope you appreciate every day. You are part of a set, but a fully functioning whole. You are a twin, but that isn’t the only thing that defines you.
Say something to parents of twins
Don’t ever compare them to each other or pit them against each other or encourage them to compete with each other. Theirs is such a special bond – they should be each other’s greatest cheerleader and advocate, not competitor.
Do you sometimes wish you weren’t a twin?
No. Never.
Do you actually like being a twin?
I love it.
More about your experience as a twin
She is my greatest joy – person who understands my humor and makes me laugh harder than anyone else. She tells me the truth even when I don’t want to hear it. She’s the one person in my life that I can always depend on, no matter what. I love her more than anyone else on the planet (don’t ever tell my husband or kids!).
